It was executed at Fontfroide near Montpellier, Provence, where he lived from appoximately 1894 to 1903.
Page 233 of René Burnand's 1925 biography of his father contains a short paragraph that probably refers to this picture. It comes at the end of a section discussing the possible reasons he painted no picture of the crucifiction or the resurrection.
"Il a tenté de peindre Jesus en Ressuscité. La lumière rayonnante des bois de Fontfroide dans les cheveux blonds de son modèle Arrighi avait sollicité son pinceau probablement plus que le mystère même de la résurrection ne l'avait inspiré. L'oevre qu'il a ébauchée et même poussée assez loin, et qui est restée dans son atelier, n'est pas une de ses meilleures. Burnand ne se sentait pas à l'aise dans la représentation de l'immatériel."Translation: " He tried to paint the Risen Jesus. The luminous light of the woods of Fontfroide in the blond hair of his model Arrighi had probably attracted his pencil more than the mystery of the resurrection had inspired him. The work he sketched out and developed to a considerable extent, but which remained in his studio, is not one of his best. Burnand did not feel at ease with the representation of the supernatural."
